Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during a jet ski race at Benoni South Africa. The corner was close to the shore and perfect for high speed cornering for dramatic water splashing.

Time

Time of day was in the afternoon. Being a sport event, camera was hand held and a tripod could not be used as the riders chose different lines thru the corners. For the look I wanted I did shoot at reasonable high shutter speeds to freeze the water and have some feeling of motion in the shot.

Lighting

I tried to have the light coming from camera left to light up the water. Also helped to light the jet ski from the side. Because it was early afternoon the sun was quite hard an difficult to shoot in. But we had to work with what I had.

Equipment

Used a Nikon D90 with a Nikor 70 - 200 lens. Handheld.

Inspiration

Did not plan the shoot. Drove by and saw the racing. Got in and took some shot just for fun. Ended up shooting quite a bit of shots.

Editing

Post processing was dropping and a bit of shadows and highlights processing. I shoot in raw so sharpening an colour correction was done

In my camera bag

In my bag I have a Nikon d7000 camera, Nikon D90, camera, two flashes one is a high-speed sync, triggers, tripod, 50mm F1.8 Nikor lens, 18 - 200 Sigma lens, 150-500 Sigma lens and a couple of ND filters.

Feedback

Sports photography is all about practice and luck.. The more you practice the easier it's gets. There is so many different looks you can get from one scene.
