Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favorite captures taken randomly during my commute home at the Pittsburg / Bay Point BART station in the East Bay Area of California. The raised overpass platform at the station overlooks the highway and allows for amazing views.

Time

I recall it being a hot summer evening in 2014, during golden hour before sunset. I was getting ready to hop on a train but the view stopped me in my tracks. It was one of those unexpected moments. I suppose I was in the right place at the right time.

Lighting

I rarely get the chance to see sunsets living in the suburbs, I remember looking up at the fiery sky and the way the sun was peaking through the cloud layer caught my eye this particular evening.

Equipment

Shot on an iPhone 4x. I enjoy shooting on a phone because it’s compact and takes quick snapshots.

Inspiration

I simply have an appreciation for nature and city life. I was drawn to the vibrancy and contrasts of the environment. I wanted to capture and share the moment I was experiencing, although the image doesn’t really do it justice. Hopefully it inspires people to look up.

Editing

I applied an Instagram filter to enhance the colors and create a more dramatic effect.

In my camera bag

I usually use a Canon Rebel T6. I have my favorite “nifty fifty” lens and an external flash. I always make sure to carry extra SD cards and charged batteries. I rarely use tripods, I tend to shoot more freehand.

Feedback

I’d say patience and composition is key. Early mornings and evenings before sunset have the best light conditions. I generally don’t follow guidelines or have expectations, it’s an organic process since nature is so random. Keep practicing and exploring!
