Behind The Lens
Location
I took this in my garden, I thought I'd be guaranteed to see some insects hiding in the grass.Time
It would be around lunch time. I didn't have time to go out with my camera, I had just bought a cheap second hand macro lens and was eager to put it to use.Lighting
The lighting is just daylight on an average clear day with the cameras inbuilt flash.Equipment
I used a Canon 7d with a Cosina 100mm macro lens and matched close up filter. It was handheld.Inspiration
I couldn't find any big enough insects to interest me then I saw this. At first I didn't know what it was and it was in grass. I saw a sliver of plywood and put it in front of the weevil which happily claimed aboard, so wood in one hand, camera in the other, a wee bit challenging especially with macro but it made me more determined to get at least one good shot!Editing
I shoot in raw and always use Lightroom, the only editing I do is clarity, sharpness and a crop, the clarity usually strengthens the colour a little. This is standard on most of my photos. In my camera bag
I always have a sigma 10-22 for landscapes, a Canon 18-55 a Canon 100-400L ( my baby!) and a Cosina 100 macroFeedback
The hardest thing is keeping it in focus due to the very short depth of field, a mini tripod would have helped a lot as even breathing can move you enough to go out of focus. I think some kind of bait 5 minutes before hand would guarantee something to shoot.
