Capped Heron (Pilherodius pileatus)

This oxbow lake at Amazon Research and Conservation Center, in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon, is a treasure trove of life. As I was slowly mowing around on it on a raft, I was able to get quite close to much of the wildlife as I did not make any sound or sudden movements.

This individual was tolerating my presence and focused on catching enough food before nightfall. Here it's about to shoot its beak into the water where it will hopefully catch a fish. It became quite clear it's not a picky eater, as all the catches I recorded were tiny glass-like fishes.
