Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the seafront at Cleethorpes, North-East Lincolnshire, England. There were four fast food outlets in a row. This one, situated on the left of the group, had the least amount of street furniture outside of the cafe, resulting in the least cluttered photo. I was stood in the side of the road to get the best composition for the shot.

Time

The shot was taken on Friday 5th August 2016 at 12:01 PM. My daughter is currently playing Pokemon Go, a craze that is sweeping through every town and city in England. Apparently Cleethorpes is one of the best places to catch rare and exclusive characters. She was walking down the side of the road and I was on the opposite side walking along the seafront. I found the group of food outlets and then noticed the signage above this particular shop. At first there were only small groups of two and three customers attending the counter. I sat on a street bench to the side of the outlet waiting for a larger group to arrive. After approximately 30 minutes this group of five ladies arrived and i took the shot.

Lighting

The time of day was not ideal time for good lighting conditions. There was a large overhang from the roof of the complex creating shadow to the front of the shop. It was fairly dull and overcast weather also. My intention was to convert the shot to black and white and alter the white balance in RAW processing.

Equipment

With street photography I try to carry the least amount of kit with me on the shoot. I was using a Nikon D7000 DSLR fitted with a Nikon 18 - 105mm lens. The camera was set to auto focus and I was using back button focusing. I have the neck strap wrapped around my right lower arm as I find this helps with stability for the shot when working without a tripod. I was using aperture priority mode, set to F5 and 1/250 sec at 25 mm, ISO 400.

Inspiration

I like to create photos that get people talking or thinking about the overall subject and not just shots of buildings or landscapes. I tend to include a poster, word or picture that will enhance the image I take. In this instance I noticed the name of the outlet. McDonalds is a world-wide branch of fast food restaurants which are available in most towns and cities around the world. However, every chain has to start somewhere so what if the first McDonalds restaurant was founded as a seafront stall just like this one, serving customers from a counter on the street.

Editing

I always shoot on RAW format and process at home. Initially I use DxO pro 8 software to correct any optical defects with the lens. Then I process using Adobe Photoshop Elements. For this shot I converted to black and white and then cropped to delete distractions in the frame. There was a man with a pushchair just walking into the frame from the right. I then add sharpening and adjust the contrast and shadows etc. I try to minimise editing as much as I can in order to achieve as real an image as possible. I intend to purchase Lightroom in the near future.

In my camera bag

As an amateur photographer I am limited in the amount of equipment I own. I do tend to leave the bag in the car and only take the things I need for the shoot.

Feedback

Slow down and compose the shot in your head before grabbing your camera. Be patient but be prepared as the best shot often happens just when you are not expecting it.
