This photo was shot at The Devils Pulpit in Finnich Glen Scotland. The name Devils Pulpit was originally used to describe a circular green-topped red sandstone rock inside the glen. According to local lore, the gorge was a secret meeting place for the ancient Druids.Time
I took the photo at midday to take advantage of the natural light filtering through the gorgeLighting
I took advantage of the natural light filtering through the gorge. Subltly lighting the gorge beyond and reflecting in the natural blood red water. The subtlety of the light created a sense of mystical calm to the sceneEquipment
This was shot with a Canon 70D and an 18-250mm sigma lens mounted on a tripodInspiration
I have seen a photo of the Devils Pulpit in a Facebook page about Scotland. I thought that it was a cool area to visit and an opportunity to practice long exposure shots. I had to slide down on my bottom, crawl hands and knees to reach the bottom of the gorge and stand in freezing water up to my waist to get the shot but the result was well worth itEditing
My photoshop skills is very limited so I relied on the raw module to bring up the exposure a bit, bring down the highlights and increase the vibrancy to bring out the red in the waterIn my camera bag
I have a natural aversion to carrying too much gear so I usually pack my messenger bag with my camera Canon 70D with the 18-250mm sigma lens, spare battery and SD card. I sometimes when I don’t forget, pack a circular polariser and a 10 stopper. The tripod only ever come with me when I plan to do long exposure otherwise it stays at homeFeedback
Learning how to use light is key in capturing great photos and patience is definitely a virtue. Learn to wait patiently for the right moment When the shot that you have in your mind comes together in front of your eyes. Don’t be intimidated by the weather, use it to your advantage
