Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken by Saint Katherine's Pier on the North Side of the River Thames in London on my last night of a weeks break with my family.

Time

This is probably one of my best 'Spare Of The Moment' shots. The sun had set and i was making my way back to the tube station to go home and i just took one more shot and this is how it turned out.

Lighting

I wanted the bridge lighting to be the main focus point of the image the purple towers and the yellow turrets., against the darkening night sky it really draws your eye to the bridge while still having a lovely background.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100 with 18-55mm Lens f3.5 ISO 800. It was shot hand held without flash

Inspiration

I love London, i live in the North East of England and very rarely get chance to visit our nations Capital. When i do the city at night is amazing from the way its lit up to the non stop life of being a Londoner. I can't help but take shots of Tower Bridge it amazes me every time is see it. Day shot and night its a great sight to behold. Im just glad that my camera sensor managed to capture it in all its night-time beauty.

Editing

This image had a little post editing, As it was shot in low light i had to bump up the ISO to 800 to get a fast enough shutter speed to avoid camera shake as i didn't have my tripod. So i did a little bit of noise reduction and tweaked a few of the colours apart from that the image is pretty much how it was straight out the camera.

In my camera bag

in my bag normally i have, Tripod, Nikon D7100 body & D3200 as spare (My first DSLR), Nikon 50mm f1.8G, Nikon 18-55mm f3.5 - f5.6 kit lens which i find is rather good and haven't replaced as it produces really sharp images. Tamron 70-300mm and a very old Nikon 50mm manual focus f1.8. Along with cleaning cloths and usual memory cards.

Feedback

Best advice i have is to wait, i was lucky as i just happened to be in the right place at the right time in regards to light and weather. Tower Bridge is always lit up at night and as long as the weathers good heading down below you'll get a great view. Always worth remembering Tower Bridge is big so a wide angle lens is a must otherwise you may as well be right down the river. Compose and shoot, remember a slight change in ISO is well worth it as London is very busy and plonking a big tripod in a busy city might not be ideal.
