Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at the Calgary Zoo.

Time

I took this photo in the early afternoon but, the Cougar was in the shade.

Lighting

As this photo was taken in the shade, by shooting in RAW I was able to lighten the exposure, I also liked the effect of the lens flare caused by the glass of the Cougar's enclosure.

Equipment

I have a Canon 7D and I used a 70 - 300mm Lens

Inspiration

I just loved the way this cougar lay, relaxed, enjoying his day.

Editing

I am very fond of using layers combined with filters. The Topaz filters are some of my favourites especially Topaz Glow. This is very effective in bringing out eyes. I would add the glow filters and then either lower the opacity or change the layer from normal to soft. This gives my photo a more natural appearance.

In my camera bag

I try to decide beforehand what I want to shoot that day. Then I bring the lens, tripod and flash that would be appropriate. My lenses are quite heavy so I only choose one for each shoot and try to work with that. If I am hiking, I would bring a monopod as it is less bulky.

Feedback

My best advice is to take many shots - the shot you think is the best, may not be when you get back to your computer. It's good to have several versions to choose from. Try to travel light, taking only what you need for each shoot.
