Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the roadside pullout on Highway 191 at Oxbow Bend of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. This is Mt. Moran which is 12,605 feet high and one of several peaks in the Teton Mountain Range which is in western Wyoming along the Idaho border. Thi

Time

This was taken at 7:44 am on June 15, 2015. We were headed to Mormon Row in Grand Teton NP. This is a spot that we had driven by before but not this early in the morning. When we came around the curve and saw the mist rising off the river we stopped and the sun was just starting to light up the mountain. We stayed and photographed for a little while and as you can see we were rewarded with a beautiful show.

Lighting

As always, the golden hours of sunrise and sunset provide some of the best lighting for outdoor and landscape photos and this was early morning sunlight illuminating the mountain tops as it began it's daily journey across the sky.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D7000 and Nikon 18-200 f3.5-5.6 lens.

Inspiration

Mountains, sunrise & majestic landscapes are always inspiring to me and with the mountain top lit up by the morning sun and the water misting up it was simply beautiful, peaceful and so quiet. The moment was shouting out to be captured on film, so to speak. Who could say no to such a request?

Editing

Yes, it was processed in Lightroom 6. It was cropped to this dimension so I could print it in a 15x36" gallery wrapped canvas, I brought details out in the shadowed areas, especially in the trees, brightened it up and sharpened all over.

In my camera bag

I carry the Nikon D7000, Nikon 18-200, Nikon 70-200, Tokina 11-16, Tokina 100 macro.

Feedback

I think the main thing is that you have to be there before the first light because the light changes so so fast. There are apps that calculate the time and direction of sunrise and sunset, etc., and they can be helpful such as http://photoephemeris.com/ and suncalc.org.
