Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken on Dartmoor. Dartmoor is a vast moorland in Devon, England. It is famed for its dramatic craggy landscape where wild ponies roam free.

Time

This was shot late on a summer afternoon as the storm clouds rolled in over the moor.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural. A full length silver reflector was used to pick up the light on her right side.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5DMKII using the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens - I shoot a lot of portraits in the environment, like this one, and this lens is just perfect for this type of work. The zoom range is ideal for closing in or shooting wide.

Inspiration

There is actually a huge story behind this shot. You can read the full story on my website, but to keep it short... I am a costume designer, last year my studio was destroyed in the floods that devastated parts of West Yorkshire. Hundreds of homes and businesses were lost. To draw attention to the effects of climate change I embarked on a project that used materials salvaged from the flood waters to create a series of elaborate costumes. The costume featured in the image is one of these pieces.

Editing

I usually do basic adjustments and RAW conversion in Lightroom, then move over to Photoshop to do more detailed work. On this particular shot the contrast and colour has been enhanced using a curves adjustment layer.

In my camera bag

Almost all of my work involves people so I never leave home without my Canon 85mm f1.2L this is the ultimate portrait lens - However, I often find that I need to shoot much wider than this lens allows and as I am working with models then I still need to be close enough to the model to direct the shot, I find in this situation the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II is perfect, so I always have these two lenses with me. I prefer to work with natural light outdoors, both these lenses handle low light perfectly so with the addition of a couple of reflectors I can work in good range of light situations. I have a huge full length reflector which I tend to use more often as a diffuser to soften harsh light. It has saved many shots that bright sunlight would have ruined.

Feedback

Yes - PLAN AHEAD! When you are working with a model your time is limited so you need to have a very clear idea of what you want to achieve and how you are going to do it. Costumes, make up and hair are always planned and fitted in advance. I also ensure that I visit the location before the day of the shoot, this enables me to work out angles, check light direction etc. It is useful to do some test shots without your model then you can work out exactly where you want to place her/him in the frame. Of course it is always good to improvise too, different ideas will naturally evolve on the day, but starting off with a solid plan of what you want to do ensures that you do not waste any shoot time.
