Location
This photo was taken in the makeshift dressing/makeup room next to our hero bedroom set in our home studio. It wasn't our intention to shoot in this room at all.Time
If I remember correctly, it must have been around 10AM or 11AM. The sun just rose above the 3 level building across the street and shine right into our windows through the blinds creating these pattern on the model.Lighting
In this photo, I didn't use any additional light. The image was shot in natural light. However due to the angle of the incoming day light and the ability to control the blinds, I was able to direct the slots of light into a specific area on the model and able to defuse the light in other area. This really helps to draw attention to the curves on her waist and to create a multi dimensional image. The biggest challenge I faced in this photo was to separate each layer of elements within the image. The model herself in the foreground, the model's reflection in the mirror, the dark wall behind her, even the mirror frame itself. By controlling the blinds and defusing some of it, we were able to create this image.Equipment
This was shot with Canon 5D mark 3 with a 24-70mm f2.8L II. The photo was taken handheld, no flash was used.Inspiration
This room was a makeshift dressing/makeup room for our shoot, I wasn't planning on shooting in this room to begin with. I came into the room to chat with my model and she was in her bathrobe fixing her hair in front of the mirror. The light was shinning into her eyes. I offer to turn the blinds so it doesn't blind her, but she loved the warmth. She said it's like the light is hugging her and kissing her. And we just followed that concept and shoot away.Editing
In post, I turned the image into Black and white to exaggerate the effect on the highlight and to really draw the attention her waist where she was being hugged by the sun. I also tweaked the contrast and added a vignette to further enhance image. In my camera bag
Normally I like to travel light, usually I just carry my Canon 5D mark iii with the Canon 24-70mm f2.8L ii and a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS ii. As well as a 430exii external flash with the pocket wizard wireless trigger, and a 5-in-1 collapsible reflector for most outdoor (or even indoor) shoot.Feedback
Something I've learned through out my journey of photography is to utilize existing light before adding any artificial light. Learn what the light is doing on your subject, study the highlight and shadow. Think of a creative way to modify it your liking. And just keep shooting , keep learning and keep growing.
