Location
The photo was taken beside the road just outside the entrance to Norfolk Botanical Gardens.Time
I had just finished a day's shooting photos in and around Norfolk Botanical Gardens, and I was leaving, when I spotted the great blue heron standing at the water's edge not too far from the road. I already had my 300mm lens on my camera, so I stopped the car and got out to approach closer to the scene without spooking the heron. I had recently gotten the lens and was having a lot of fun with it, and I am especially pleased with this shot. The whole event was spontaneous and rewarding.Lighting
There was late afternoon lighting, so there was soft lighting on the heron's back and the ripples in the water.Equipment
I shot this handheld with a Canon 20D and my 300mm f4 lens.Inspiration
The impromptu scene begged to be photographed, I mean, how could I not? It was a pleasant, peaceful scene and the bird's stance at the water's edge was photo worthy. I was excited to see the results that I would get from the newly acquired lens. I was not disappointed.Editing
I did basic post processing, reducing the highlights some and adjusted the clarity some, but that's about it.In my camera bag
I have been a long time fan of Canon, so that's the brand of my cameras and lens. That day I would have had my 100mm f2.8 Macro lens, also.Feedback
I would say that if you happen upon an unplanned scene worthy of capture, be spontaneous to safely stop and capture it. Don't be too hurried, be aware of the scenery that you're passing through. You never know when you happen upon something camera-worthy.
