Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo at my home while I was getting ready for the day.

Time

It was taken early to mid morning.

Lighting

I always have a little lamp with the shade taken off for better lighting for when I'm getting ready, which is what contributed to this photo's lighting the most.

Equipment

I only use my smartphone right now as I don't actually own a camera currently. Most of my photographs on my profile are from my Huawei Honor 5X, but this particular photo and a couple others on my profile were taken with my old phone, the Asus Zenfone 2

Inspiration

Honestly, I was just playing around at first by taking some selfies and decided to try and experiment with a more artistic approach.

Editing

The photo was originally taken in color. In post I traded the color for black and white and finished up by editing the levels of shadow/contrast/highlighting.

In my camera bag

Well, I'm currently saving up for a proper camera that I've been wanting and until I'm able to afford it, I've really just been using my camera on my smartphone. The way I edit my photographs is through the editing tools on Instagram and/or on my phone. It's really that simple! Just do the best with what you've got!

Feedback

This self-portrait is up close rather than a self-portrait that would show from the torso up or even your whole body, so when it's more zoned in like this I would say to try thinking about it as if you were trying to capture an insect on a flower or anything else up close - detail is everything. You have to pay close attention to the characteristics and make sure they're shown clearly. However, don't edit any element of the photo to the point where the essence of the person/subject is no longer there.
