Behind The Lens

Location

I was scouting for a session one day near a popular park and I decided to explore a little further out. This location was not the prettiest at first glance and it was getting dark fast, but I saw a group of tree limbs leaning towards each other practically asking to frame a subject.

Time

This was taken about an hour before sunset.

Lighting

There was a gorgeous pocket of light shining between the trees, I knew I had to capture a story there. I tend to like darker and more dramatic light in my images, so that spot really drew me in.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon D750 with my 140 f/2.8 lens. I only used natural light.

Inspiration

I love to capture timeless and whimsical images when photographing children. I also like to incorporate storybooks because they are so magical for children and inspire me as well. I often tell them to bring their favorite stuffed animal to document for a session. I sat him with his bear and quickly gave him a book. As he began reading to his little friend in that pocket of light, it just made my heart sing and I clicked away!

Editing

I always have an vision of what I want the final image to look like before I start editing in Lightroom and Photoshop. I shoot in RAW and spend a lot of time post-processing every image because I enjoy making my vision come to life. On this image I used a couple of actions and many hand edits, my favorite tool is curves! I also added the magical element of leaves falling to frame them with an overlay.

In my camera bag

I usually keep my 70-200mm lens on my NikonD750 because I love it so much, but I bring my Nikon 50mm 1.8 in my bag just in case.

Feedback

Planning ahead is key. Children are unpredictable, so I always scout my location and find my light beforehand. As a child photographer, you want to be in the present and focus on them. I believe when there is a genuine connection between the photographer and child it creates beautiful images. I prepare the setting I hope to capture, but always let the kids just be kids. It is important to be patient with them and let the moments you hope to capture organically happen.
