Location
This photo was taken at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Rhode Island is a great place to shoot due to the great ocean views and the foliage in the fall is a wonderful sight as well. Beavertail is a very popular place for photographers to shoot and anything you capture there always creates a wonderful image whether be off of a DSLR or your phone.Time
This photo was taken right as the sun came down, probably around 8:00pm eastern time. It was fairly dark out and I was able to set the camera for a 10 second exposure to capture all the colors as well as the blur from the movement of the water.Lighting
I was experimenting a lot with long exposure photographs because I hadn't experimented with them often. When photographing this photo I thought the composition and perspective of the lighthouse was interesting and I felt that a longer exposure would be super creative and dramatic considering the movement of the waves created the smokey/blurry look of the water. I really enjoy seeing photographs with longer exposure that show that effect of moving water and I felt like it was a perfect fit for this photograph.Equipment
This photograph was shot with a Nikon D7000 equipped with a 18-105mm Nikkor VR lens. Camera was mounted on a tripod as well.Inspiration
As I said earlier, Beavertail is a photographers dreamland. It's secluded, beautiful, and you can honestly go back there 8 times a week and you will continuously find more and more opportunity for photographs. I was out on the rocks just trying to find a good frame and my eyes caught this and I knew it would make for a very interesting photograph. Many friends and family have asked for a print of this photo.Editing
Yes, all of my post processing is done through Lightroom. I brightened this photo a tad, gave it a little bit of extra saturation, and I also increased the clarity and sharpness a little bit. I won't lie either, I had some black spotting on the photo from a dirty image sensor and I had to edit those out as well, lol.In my camera bag
My bag usually consists of my D7000, 2 speed lights (sb700 and 800), my Nikkor 18-105 VR, my 35mm f/1.8, spare batteries, battery chargers, extra SD cards, and also a little cheap cleaning kit I grabbed off of Amazon.Feedback
I would recommend everyone to visit Beavertail sometime in their life. If you're not a fellow Rhode Islander then you definitely have to visit. If you have any areas near you which looks like this, I would just go there right before sunset with your camera and tripod and just setup somewhere and practice your long exposures. I keep my ISO super low at all times to avoid any kind of grain what so ever. You can obviously up it some bit if you're in pitch darkness, but I still keep it low if I can. Make sure your tripod and camera setup is sturdy and if your camera can use a wireless shutter remote, I'd invest in one of those so you don't have to click the shutter and cause any camera shake. Wireless remotes can be found at super low cost and they're pretty fun to use.
