Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot on my balcony in Dnipro, Ukraine. I am professional food photographer and food stylist. My photos were represented in London, UK, Kyiv, Ukraine and Vejle, Denmark.

Time

This photo was shot on in April, 24, 2016 (16:55) in my balcony with day light from behind and behind right. White reflector is on front left. You can see vintage cupboard and wooden dish on it with quail and chicken hardboiled eggs, chopped dill and parsley and spring onion, this is traditional addition to the Ukrainian Green Sorrel Borscht. When your pour your bowl with borscht then just add sour cream and all that stuff, cut bacon, garlic and rye bread, pour Gorilka into glass and enjoy as real Ukrainian Kozak. We cook Green Borscht with Sorrel only in spring when sorrel is young and tender. The rest of the time we cook the usual red borsch with tomato and cabbage (less common with nettles).

Lighting

I like to shot with day light because this give my still life pictures trendy rural touch and rustic nuance. My windows face south and there is always a lot of light on the balcony. Sometimes it is too much and it shadows are too harsh, so I have to use a diffuser in order to get soft light. But in early morning (untill 10 a.m.) and after 5 p.m. in summer light is absolutely fantastic.

Equipment

I always use tripod. I used for this photo my old camera Nikon D5100 (DX), lens 105mm Nikkor Micro, f5, 1/30 sec, ISO 100.

Inspiration

Beautiful view and sun rides from my window often inspires me to shot. And what is the most popular object can I use as a model in this situation? Of course it's food! Not surprisingly for people who know me, I became Food Photographer and Food Stylist.

Editing

Usually I use Capture One (or Lightroom some years ago), then Photoshop and Nik Collection at the end of postproduction.

In my camera bag

It may surprise you, but I do not carry a camera with me, only a smartphone in my bag. I can only put white (or silver with foil surface) thick paper as a reflector to my bag. I take all photos of food at home or at a customer location (e.g. restaurant or farmhouse, dairy, shop). At my studio I use Nikon D850 105mm Micro lens 50mm lens Nikon D5100 DX 35mm DX 18-105mm

Feedback

I'm not sure that I could give an advice for anyone but if you want to know how I learn making pictures of food: Just try to shoot at least once a day your own meal (for example every breakfast). You can also make something like challenge "365-breakfast challenge" or "My diet food" or "What Nickname eats". It will help you improve your skills.
