Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph in a field next to a museum in Oklahoma.

Time

This was taken 20-30 minutes before sunset in mid July.

Lighting

Golden hour is my absolute favorite time of day to shoot because you get the stunning warmth and yellow glow with your photographs.

Equipment

I used a Canon T6s with a 55-250mm lens.

Inspiration

It was one of those instances where the photo came to me as it was being taken. There was actually a road between two fields and I wanted to get my subject to where it looked as if it were one large empty field. I was taking the girl’s senior photos and she is incredible at playing the viola, so I loved incorporating that part of who she is into her photos.

Editing

I don’t normally do much post-processing with my photographs. I cranked up the saturation a tiny bit and made the subject more clear in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I normally have my “Nifty 50mm”, 55-250mm lens, some external lights, extra lens caps (because I lose them so much, lol), and any props I think that I may need depending on what the shoot may be.

Feedback

To capture a similar photograph, I would look for an empty field somewhere in the country. Set your subject far enough from the background she or he is behind but far enough away from you so you get the depth of field in front of and behind the subject. Asking people to pose may not look so natural, so I just told the girl to start playing me her favorite piece. You want to capture a candid moment with a photo like this. In order to get the sun flare that I did in this photograph, I took the photo about 20-30 minutes before sunset when the sun was still high enough in the sky.
