Behind The Lens

Location

When my husband gave me my first DSLR camera this past February I was looking to take it out. With the weather being perfect I searched for local hikes that seemed easy. If we had stayed on the main path this might had been true. The explorers in us got us off the beaten path and onto something made for goats. At times I thought I was going to need assistance getting off the mountain, but once at the top of the ridge this beautiful valley was presented.

Time

It was late afternoon. With my legs burning and the lack of water, we were attempting to make our trek back to the car. One minor problem, I had to keep stopping to take pictures. I couldn't pass up the view.

Lighting

With the sun making its way towards setting behind the mountains, I love the glow it makes on the green hills. It also made for a difficult time when shooting directly into the sun.

Equipment

I used the Nikon D7200 with the Nikkor 18-140mm lens that came in the kit. I also used a polarized filter.

Inspiration

Victory! I was inspired to take this photo because I made it to the top. It may seem like a tiny victory to many, but getting over the flu and being out of shape this was a huge victory for me. Plus the view, it was breathtaking.

Editing

This was one of my first post processing photos I did in Lightroom. I used no presets as to allow myself an opportunity to understand the controls a little better in developing. For this picture I slightly changed, well, just about everything. I brought the exposure up, contrast down, the highlights up, the shadows down, the whites up, the blacks down. I increased the clarity, vibrance, and saturation, as well as, applied lens corrections, and adjusted the detail controls.

In my camera bag

I am a newbie when it comes to the DSLR world. I don't have much at this point, so everything I have fits in my bag. I am currently using the Nikon D7200 with the Nikkor 18-140mm lens that came in the kit. I also have a Nikkor Micro 40mm f/2.8 and a Savage Macro Variable Auto-Extension Tube 55-71mm. I have polarized filters I bring along for both lenses. One spare battery, if not two. An extra memory card in case things get crazy and I need more room. A lens cleaning kit because sometimes, most of the time, the elements are not ideal for a camera. Finally a Phottix wired remote and a flashlight. I went with the wired remote because no additional batteries required.

Feedback

The Upper Las Virgenes Open space in the San Fernando Valley is a great place to go hiking. Formerly the Ahmanson Ranch, the 2,983 acres of open space became apart of public parkland in 2003. Although my husband and I have only explored a tiny portion of it, it offers extensive trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. We accessed the park from Victory Blvd. in West Hills. In the winter and spring the weather is mild to cool for hiking, and the mountains are green and lush from the rain. During the summer and fall months the hike can get intense with temperatures reaching over a hundred with little shade available. The grass is dead, and the only greenery available is from the oak trees holding on for dear life.
