Location
This was taken at ZSL Whipsnade zoo. As a self taught street and opportunist photographer I like to snap the moments as they happen. This was a particular moment when the keepers came out to feed the giraffes. I just couldn't resist snapping this image of the giraffe's head poking through the fence, as if to say hi.Time
I spent the whole day at the zoo looking out for good photo opportunities so the exact time I can't remember. It was between 11-2 and the light suggests it was probably around 12.Lighting
The best time to shoot is on a cloudy/overcast day. This diffracts the light creating a softer light so you are able to get more detail. For portraits I often use side or back lighting. On this shot, I obviously didn't have a choice on the light, so just took it as I did.Equipment
This was shot on Nikon D3300 on the starter lens at 50mm zoom.Inspiration
I was just enjoying watching the animals when this guy poked his head into my view and I couldn't resist getting a shot.Editing
I simply increased the saturation a little as it was a bit dull.In my camera bag
Usually just my camera and a smallish zoom lens! I feel that when you are photographing not in a studio you should limit the amount of equipment you carry. Unless you need a specific piece of kit (ie. Tripod for long exposure) then just take one lens and a camera. Shots often pass quickly so you don't have time to change lenses etc.Feedback
Always have your camera out and ready! Go to zoos/wildlife parks to get a good shot without having to spot them in the wild. Try to use a fast shutter speed. It freezes the moment and produces great detail and sharpness. Just make sure it isn't underexposed. Images that are are often hard to recover and lack detail.
