Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph whilst i was living in Biscarrosse in the South west of France. One of my favourite parts of the world. The beach is as long as you can see in both directions. Along the south end is a row of these posts in the ocean which divide the beach from the Military training area.

Time

Generally i like to shoot early evening on the beach when the sun is starting to lose it's heat and glare.

Lighting

All natural lighting.

Equipment

I shoot with my Nikon D90, i am a Nikon diehard, never used anything else. Manfotto tripod balanced on various rocks to stop it sinking into the sand. I used a remote release to prevent any camera shake.

Inspiration

hmmmmm....two things. I love the ocean, it's ever changing face, you can go to the beach everyday for a year and the ocean will never be the same. I love the gentle warmth you get from a long exposure on the beach.

Editing

I used photoshop with the nic software black and white filter. My favourite filter kit. I am not a big fan of lots of post processing. a boost in contrast and tweak in exposure maybe but never really any more than that.

In my camera bag

i always carry my stock lens, my 50mm and 18-24 wide angle. that way everything is covered. other things i find in my pack are my manfrotto, ND grads, polarising filter, remote release and something to eat.... snickers usually!

Feedback

I am not an expert by any means, i take photos because i love to take photos, whilst being uncomfortable giving advice i would say, make sure your battery is fully charged, long exposures really hammer battery life. 2, beach shots like these tend to get a fine sea mist on your lens, make sure you have a decent lens cloth, 3 and lastly, make sure your tripod is very secure, i lost a few pictures when the sea washed the sand away from under the tripod legs. Cheers Woolie
