Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Alaska in the Tracy Arms Fjord while on a cruise in early September. The ship was slowly zigzagging between the surrounding mountains headed for a glacier. As we cruised closer I noticed icebergs which increased in number ands size as we sailed closer. It was quite exciting when I heard a couple small icebergs bumping along the sides of the ship!!

Time

I woke early, around 8:00am, in my stateroom and went up on deck to discover mountains all around us! I was so awestruck, I quickly went to the bow and saw the glacier slowly coming into view along with the scattered icebergs and the reflections in the water.

Lighting

The sun was rising to our left, revealing the light shining between the mountains. The morning light was reflecting off the far mountain as well as the water between more mountains forming an upsidedown "V" shape. The liighted "V" not only softly reflected the farthest mountain but also the glacier while the icebergs floated on either side of the "V" ... not inside it!!! I couldn't snap the photos fast enough!

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7200 with a Nikon DX 18-300 zoom lens and a polarized filter.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the beauty of Alaska on this once in a lifetime trip! This shot will always be a treasured memory.

Editing

I love digital cameras because it is so easy to adjust your photos. I was able to crop out all surrounding objects such as other passengers and parts of the ship that appeared on the sides and bottom of my shot.

In my camera bag

While on vacation, I always carry my 18-300 zoom lens, an attachable flash and filters.

Feedback

I highly recommend using a polarized filter. It can reduce glare, making your photo clear, allowing unobstructed scenes. The colors are richer and your pics are sharper.
