Behind The Lens

Location

The shoot took place by the river Thames in Oxford. This photo was actually taken in a litter-ridden patch of grass behind some boat houses!

Time

This photo was taken at around 16:30 on the 17th August.

Lighting

I love the warmth of summer evening sunlight, it boasts a beautiful and golden glow. I enhanced the natural light with a gold reflector to reduce harsh shadows.

Equipment

This was shot this with my Canon 6D and a 50mm f/1.8 lens. The only other equipment used was a reflector.

Inspiration

It was a scorching hot day and Becky (the model) and I spoke of how it felt as if we were somewhere in the Mediterranean! My mind took me away to a hotter climate and I wanted to capture the idea. When I spotted a patch of long grass behind the boat houses, I thought it would be perfect our thoughts were brought to life.

Editing

I don't like to over edit my fashion and portraiture work as I personally think it takes away from the natural beauty. I lightly retouched the image to enhance the warmth and add more depth. I like to play around with the colours to see how I can change the feel of the photo too.

In my camera bag

I tend to pack quite lightly on a typical fashion shoot so I can cover a large area and get a wider variation of backgrounds.I always pack my Canon 6D as it's water and shock resistant. My Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens is always a go to as it takes flattering portraits and performs well in poorer lighting situations. It is also very small and lightweight, so it pretty much lives on my 6D body! I also often take a Caonon 20mm f/2.8 lens as it's great for landscapes and sunsets. I always grab a reflector before I leave for location shoots to counteract harsh shadows.

Feedback

Always explore when at a new location because so many of the best photos are taken in unusual and unexpected places.
