Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a one to one day with a professional photographer in the Peak District near Sheffield to learn a little more about Landscape photography my wife bought me the experience for a Christmas present. I spend a lot of my time in the peak district walking and camping with the family but we mainly stick to well known areas where there is lots of people. So for this day I asked if we could go off the beaten track to some remote places not so busy, I think we so no more than 6 people all day.

Time

It was late in March last year 2015 the day of the Eclipse, we started early to get to a place to photograph the Eclipse about 08:30. This photo was taken about 11:00 - 11:30 it was a dark day the cloud and mist never really lifted with drizzle coming in and out.

Lighting

The light was pretty poor as you can imagine with the conditions as they were not ideal for the type of photography I would normally shoot now.

Equipment

At the time I hadn't been doing photography long and was just finding my feet so I was using my first DSLR a Sony A37 with a Sigma 28-105. I didn't use a tripod for this shot it was handheld.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this shot actually came from the professional I was with, like I said before I was on a one to one training day to discover Landscape Photography and the shot was actually me practising my leading lines. As all Landscape Photographers will tell you pathways, rivers and walls come from the corners leading into the frame.

Editing

The original image was very drab full of mist, I tried converting to Black and White but that didn't work so I decided to try and bring out the colour using several different adjustment layers in Photshop i.e Hue and Saturation, Vibrance, Exposure and Gradients.

In my camera bag

I've now upgraded from the Sony A37 but staying with Sony I now shoot with the A77 mk2 I love the focusing system on this camera and it seems to be great in low light. I generally use a sigma 17-70 f2.8 for the majority of my photography but I also carry a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and a Sony 50 1.8 prime lens. Tripod wise I bought a Velbron with a ball head. Also in my bag is my cleaning kit and waterproof cover living in the north of England we tend to get a bit of the wet stuff unannounced.

Feedback

The Peak District is a great place for photographers, the Landscapes and the Wildlife are so varied with lakes, rivers, hills, woodlands and farmland the opportunities are endless if you put in the time and get to know the area, but if it's just a day visit around one of the many reservoirs this can be just as fulfilling.
