Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Fleet Pond, a fair sized lake right on my doorstep that can be absolutely beautiful at sunset. I was actually just messing around with my new camera and popped over to the lake with my friend, but was so happy to come home with this a few other images I'm really proud of.

Time

This was at sunset in Spring so I guess around 6 or 7pm. The lake is really great at setting a foreground to the beautiful sun setting in the back.

Lighting

I chose to only use the natural light for this image so as to create a really effective silhouette and keep that natural sunset glow.

Equipment

Nothing but my D610 and a good eye....!

Inspiration

I'd be lying if I told you there was anything more that inspired me other than a beautiful bit of scenery and being in the right place to get this stunning image.

Editing

I shoot everything in raw so often do preliminary retouching before I possibly add enhancements such as black and white. I don't like photos to look fake though so try to take as much care as possible with my original photograph and spend as little time in post as possible.

In my camera bag

I always carry my D610 along with a duel battery pack and as many memory cards as I can cram in the camera bag. I'm spending most of my camera time as possible with just my 55 but do carry an 18-200 in case I need it, although it's a package lens which dilutes the quality of my photos so try not to use it unless I really need to. I do carry a fisheye too, plus a Godox v850 flash (I have two for studio use).

Feedback

F8 suited this pic with a quick shutter speed. I wanted the silhouette to look as black and blunt as possible but still wanted the sun to glow and look natural. This was all about framing. Aesthetically speaking too I wanted the light reflection to line up vertically which personally I think makes this a really strong image.
