This photo was taken back in 2016 in Newquay, Cornwall. I was road tripping the Cornish coast with a friend and we’d wandered to the beach to chill after a long summers day of driving. Between chasing each other on the sand and taking photos together, I saw a surfer in the waves. Newquay is big for surfing competitions. I watched the surfer a while as the sun went down. I was taking shots of the water during the sunset anyway, so I waited for the surfer to paddle back and shot this photo. For me it was a stray away from my normal nature only landscapes. And for an old iPhone the end result is impressive. I didn’t realise it’d be so popular!Time
It was around dusk. That short time when the sun goes down and everything goes twilight blue before dark.Lighting
The photo is shot facing the sun but after it’s gone down under the water horizon. You then have the lighting of the cityscape along the cliff side in the background reflecting off the water onto the sand the surfer is walking across. The natural light contrasting against that of the cliff side really makes this image!Equipment
Surprisingly, I used an iPhone 4s (new at the time but a really old model now!). The rear camera on the phone was an 8 megapixel with an aperture capability of f/2.4. The zoom was just short of maxing out and the auto focus was a godsend! Really, iPhones aren’t given enough credit!Inspiration
I just love taking landscape photos and especially at sunset. Everything in the shot just looked brilliant and I didn’t want to forget a moment like that.Editing
I had a photo editing app on my phone and also the Instagram editing tools. First I used the photo app to illuminate some highlights and lesson some shadow to make the light pop a little more. Then I sharpened the image to improve the zoom of the camera. I was posting the image to Instagram and used it’s Lux tool to pull these changes a little further. The filters on Instagram are also useful. I put a little of the X-Pro filter as a darken layer to make the background sunlight lighter and the foreground shadows darker. In my camera bag
Honestly, I now have the camera set up with a Nikon d300 and a standard 50mm lense, complete with stand. And I am planning to expand with new lenses. But usually I just use my phone as it’s always on me. If I see something I want to snap it’s right there in my pocket! And phone cameras are really getting better! As long as you have the right apps for editing, you’re all set!Feedback
Just wander around and let the moment take you! Similar to life, if you think too much about the shot, you tend to miss it. I recommend having the most up to date camera phone you can afford (I now use an iPhone se2!) and installing Photo editor and also Cap-cut. They’re free and come with a great range of tools to help you get the photo you want! If you’re really serious about phone photos and editing with an app you can buy the premium versions too and get loads more! You can even send dslr caught photos and use them to edit. These apps work on iPads too! Just play around until the image looks how you want it to. Check out my Instagram for more photos! @crazyrachie22.
