Corps of Engineer land extend a mile behind my house along the Des Moines River. I walked there every spring to see what was emerging--the green of new leaves, the young sprouts soon to wear lovely flowers. It was always interesting to get way down on the ground to see what was coming forth. On this day there were tiny green buds growing on stems which looked only slightly bigger than a human hair.
