Behind The Lens

Location

I always look forward to adding new plants, flowers, herbs, fruits trees, veggies and other things to my garden. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this guy hitching a ride on this wonderful little Avocado Tree. The funny thing is, he had to hang on through out a 20 minute Truck ride home from the nursery. I dropped the tree in the hole and right there he was look at me.... Run in the house wash the dirt off my hands, throw the towel to the floor as I fly into the bedroom for the camera. Grab and go because I am always ready to shoot. I just hope he is still to be found.......

Time

I spent the whole morning preparing the garden for the new addition of the Avocado Tree. So by the time I got back from the Nursery it was almost Noon. So the Sun was my natural lighting and there was not a cloud in the sky that day and the temp was blazing 80 ish,but low humidity. Lots of light.

Lighting

Well I got real lucky with the time of day I saw the mantis and the position of the Sun. Right over head. Blazing...... But it does cause a little challenge of working with close-up filters and Leafs, Yes I said Leafs. A moving Subject. This little guy does not just sit still. He sees me and he moves around a lot. Then he's got this giant camera shoved in his face..... I'd run too. Under leafs hides the light so that creates a challenge, see, Leafs no Light.

Equipment

I have a Canon Rebel T5 with the 18-55mm lens, and the Vivitar set of 3 close up filters

Inspiration

I can't lie this was pure luck. I am always looking for a great shot to seal in time, so I am always thinking, scanning, watching and waiting for that next great shot that satisfies my need to be creative.

Editing

Once again I got so lucky with the position of the sun and the lighting and much need for lighting correction. As I look closer I should have gotten the web on leg a retouch or two. Next time.

In my camera bag

I Love to Pack a Grab Bag, Just the basic...... My Favorite around town travel camera the Canon Rebel T5 Loaded with the Canon 75-300mm lens and I stared using a Altura Lens protector on the end and I Love it, You can stack filters on it a everything...... so I am set to shoot at anytime.

Feedback

Well If you read the theme thru- out this it is to be ready to shoot at any time..... so if you happen across a find like this you can catch him. The internet is also a great source to locate Praying Mantis habits and traits. Knowing when and what time of year they are active helps and Luck.....
