Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking on a camping trip to Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. The exact location is Cavell Lake just before reaching Mt. Edith Cavell and it's beautiful Angel Glacier. This is one of my favorite locations as the landscape and colors are always beautiful. There's different breathtaking locations with good landscape photograph opportunities all over the Canadian Rockies.

Time

I was coming back with my daughter and a couple of friends from a noon hike to Mt. Edith Cavell pond, just below the glacier. We decided to stop at Cavell lake around 2:00 pm just before heading back to Edmonton. Lucky for me the sky was partly cloudy and no rain and I was able to capture such a beautiful landscape.

Lighting

I'm no expert, I mostly learn by just going out and shooting and online tips. By I really like partly cloudy days as you can get different light situations on question of seconds as the clouds can cover, partly cover or uncover the sun. On this specific photo I took a couple of shots with said variations, being this one the one that most appeal my taste.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5100 with a 35mm 1.8 Nikkor Lens set on a Manfrotto tripod. For this exposure the settings I used were 35mm f/5 S1/400 ISO 100

Inspiration

I have always loved the great outdoors, at every chance I get I will go out exploring; and of course I carry my camera as you never know when you are going to encounter the perfect scenery and conditions for that great picture. One of my favorite spots since moving to Canada from Mexico has been the Canadian Rockies as they offer one of the best landscape photography opportunities in the area and probably the world. On this specific occasion just been there with the majestic background made me want to capture it and share it with other people that have not been or are not able to go there. I tried to capture the moment as accurate as possible and hopefully the result will transmit what I was intending.

Editing

I don't do a lot of processing as I prefer to keep things natural. I shoot in RAW format then I process my files with Photoshop. I will do basic processing like adjusting clarity, shadows, saturation, contrast and exposure to mention some. I do like photographs that are process in a more complex way (layers, HDR, etc) as some people can create really awesome images but I myself at this point have not explore that option.

In my camera bag

One of my favorite style is landscape photography, so off course my first lens on the bag will be a Sigma wide angle 10-20mm. I also carry a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 for poor light and shadows and to capture portraits. Last but not least is a Nikkor 50-200mm zoom as I like to capture wildlife and people from a distance without them posing for the camera as it gives a more natural approach. I also carry a Nikon Speedlight SB-700, my Manfrotto tripod, a remote release and a Promaster ND fader filter for the wide angle lens.

Feedback

There's a lot of opportunities to go out there and capture precious moments and landscapes. My advise is to get out there and don't be afraid, don't try to copy others just be yourself. Don't just shoot from the spot everyone else does. Try different locations, experiment move around, stand in front of if and if you like what you see capture it don't be afraid. Some of the best photograph's I believe are created like that. And always carry your camera, as you never know when you will find something worth capturing and sharing.
