Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo after completing a 17km hike through the Jonkershoek Mountain trail near Cape town South Africa. These Blue-headed Iguanas (Bloukop koggelmander) are everywhere in those mountains. From the first time I saw one I wanted to and tried very hard to get a good picture, but the lizards are very shy and move too much as well as too quickly get good picture with the camera I'm using at the moment. Eventually I was able to get a few good pictures and I'm so glad I did. These turned out better than I could have hope!

Time

The time I took this picture was late in the afternoon, around 4 PM.

Lighting

It was difficult to get this picture and took several tries, but eventually my persistence rewarded me with a few great pictures.

Equipment

I used a Nikon l840. Nothing fancy but it works for basic situations with moderate to good lighting.

Inspiration

The beauty of these lizards

Editing

I added a bit of exposure and added a little contrast to the lizard.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry my cellphone, which is great for landscapes and portraits. I also usually have my Nikon l840.

Feedback

There's a lot to be said about the skills and mindsets that are necessary for taking quality photos. The most important of these skills (in my opinion) is being able to visualize in your mind what you want before you actually capture the photo, In other words you should be able see In your mind what it will look like on the screen or view-finder of your camera before it is actually there. Second most important in my mind is to understand what the to best go about capturing what you've already visualized in you're mind would be. A solid understanding of how things like angles and the effects of lighting actually work is essential to growing in this skill. Also knowing the limits of your gear is incredibly invaluable too. Third is not giving up when you don't get exactly what you want out of a curtain picture. You have to keep pushing yourself to do it better next time to become a better photographer.
