Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my yard. I live in the country on 17 acres so insects and wildlife are abundant!

Time

I snapped this in the late afternoon. I love to shoot when the sun is no longer at its brightest and the lighting is a lot dreamier.

Lighting

I don't have any fancy equipment so I have to use natural light to my advantage which is what I did here. It also helped to have the tree filter some of that light.

Equipment

This was shot with my trusty Canon 20d with a 50mm f/1.8. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Beautiful light and this beautiful subject! Butterflies are fascinating creatures and so naturally striking, they're always good models although sometimes tricky to photograph.

Editing

I adjusted the warmth ever so slightly but that's it. I always strive for minimal editing.

In my camera bag

The only equipment I own is my Canon 20d and my two lenses - the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and the Canon 70-300mm.

Feedback

Patience! It can be quite difficult trying to get the perfect shot of a moving subject but being patient helps tremendously. When photographing an animal or insect it also helps to not make any sudden movements and spend some time in the area you're photographing. Sometimes I tend to feel like I blend in to them after a while. :-)
