Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from my first flower garden in my new home! I took so many pictures with both of my cameras and really liked the simplicity of the full bloom and one just beginning. It reminds me of the cycle of life.

Time

I was sitting on my patio with a coffee in one hand and a camera in the other. I was capturing images back and forth between my flowers and the hummingbirds. I noticed the sunlight was just beginning to work its way over nature trail which gave full light to the Black-Eyed Susans and gave a terrific lighting for the bokeh of the nature trail. This picture was taken on June 29, 2015 at 9:16 a.m.

Lighting

I really enjoy taking photos and call myself an extreme amateur, but am not always available for the golden hour. I believe if you have your camera ready, keep an open eye you can still capture the magical moments anytime of the day. Watch for sunlight to bounce off of windows, rooftops, through the trees, really anywhere.

Equipment

This image was taken with my Canon PowerShot SX500 IS.

Inspiration

I love taking photos and just noticing all the beauty in this world. With my husband, we had just built my first new home the previous year and of course that included putting in a few gardens and was just enjoying life. It was really nice seeing all the flowers in bloom, watching the birds and just sitting back to let the beauty soak in.

Editing

I just tweaked the highlights and shadows a little. I could have brought the highlights down even more, but I didn't want to effect the contrast between the flowers and the bokeh.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon PowerShot SX500 IS and my Nikon D5500. The Canon is what I consider an advanced point and shoot so nothing else for this camera. For my Nikon, my favorite lens right now is the Nikkor 18-300 mm F/5-6.3 GVR ED. With this lens I can go from macro to zoom in seconds. My husband has the Tamron SP 150-600 mm F/5-6.3 for the extended bird shots, but he has been using my lens more and more. I always have an assortment of filters, my Yongnuo YN560III Speedlight, my trusty tripod, and plenty of lens wipes. I have a couple of lens that are really just adding weight to my bag right now, but I do want to purchase a fixed lens in the future.

Feedback

As an "extreme amateur" I am having fun taking photos no matter what time of the day, keep your eye open for the beauty of the image. Lighting can be intimidating, but I have found that I love the light when a good storm is coming in with the brightness of the sun and the dark clouds rolling in will give me the lighting I need for great saturation. I love sunrises and sunsets but if you are an amateur photographer like myself, life and work won't always let you be available for those golden hours. Practice, practice and more practice and lots of patience. I just wish I had been as committed when I was younger, but don't know if I would have been as appreciative of the beauty you can find anywhere.
