Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey, where the Delaware River meets the Atlantic Ocean. In the background are the remains of the concrete ship US Atlantus.

Time

This was taken shortly before sunset, approximately 7:46PM.

Lighting

The darker clouds started to move in and I wanted to get a nice natural and dramatic sunset with the rays of sun light peeking through the clouds, while still maintaining a balanced foreground. I set my camera on a tripod a few feet away, timed shutter and a flash (on manual) and set at full power. The aperture was set at f/22 with ISO 200 and the shutter was set at 1/40.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 on manual mode, with a Sigma ultra wide angle lens (10-20mm), a lightweight travel tripod with a ball head and a Nikon SB-600 speedlight.

Inspiration

For me, sunsets, the end of a day for some and the start for others, are the perfect time to put life into perspective and think about our particular situations. I was in the midst of a significant amount of turmoil in my life and I needed that time to reflect and think, and I wanted to record that.

Editing

Actually barely any post-processing on this image. Aside from clearing a few dust spots from the image all I did was increase the contrast and the shadows a bit. This was also shot in JPEG with the camera set to neutral processing. Typically I like to shoot in RAW but on that day I forgot to switch back to RAW.

In my camera bag

My bag is actually set for real estate photography, something I ventured into last year. At times I would just take the camera and this lens or the other to a smaller sling bag, but I would often find I wish I had this or that, which was in the main bag. So now I carry the bigger bag everywhere I go and it includes, the Nikon D7000 body, a Sigma 10-20mm lens, a Nikkor 18-105mm, an older Tamrom 28-200mm, a Nikkor 50m f1/4 prime, a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 prime, 3 speedlights with remote controls and an infrared shutter release. In addition I carry the lightweight tripod and a mono pod. I also carry custom designed rain covers for each of the lenses, a bag cover and a poncho.

Feedback

Sunsets go by really quickly, so be sure to enjoy it fully and don't fret too much about the camera and how the image is coming out. Do some research on other sunset images and the camera settings and use those as baselines if you are unsure, then adjust as you go. Also, plan your shoot earlier in the day if you can.
