Behind The Lens

Location

A place my family and I call Dallas Divide in Colorado. This is at the border of Ralph Lauren's Doyble RL Ranch.

Time

This is about mid-day. As to drive here from where we were staying is roughly 3 hours.

Lighting

Lighting for me is key. Most importantly natural lighting, it gives a lift of colour to anything you are taking a picture of. When you're taking pictures of objects or people it's tough when the weather is clouded over. Then you can't get the natural glow of the sun, this is when I might use my camera flash. However, I mute the flash by covering it with an old 35mm film capsule. I saw thing trick in a photography book a few years back and absolutely loved it, you don't get that ultra shine from the flash giving a more natural look. When you're taking landscape pictures with a clouded day, it's hard as you want the beautiful sunshine. But whatever the weather, the picture will look beautiful no matter what. Sometimes taking a picture requires no thinking at all. It may also require just playing around with your camera and finding what suits you.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3200 with the AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm lens, my hands and a fence as my tripod.

Inspiration

My family and I were at this ranch looking out over the amazing mountains when this marmot appeared from behind the rocks. My mum told me that when she was young she read a book about the Adventures of Charlotte the Marmot. So we named her Charlotte. I wanted to take this photo because of her pose. One paw on a rock and face looking out at the world. She was beautiful.

Editing

I wish I knew how to do post processing! Something to learn

In my camera bag

My Nikon D3200 with the original lens, my lens ranging from 55-300mm. I also carry around some film cameras, a Polaroid camera and I find that disposable cameras are amazing.

Feedback

I love taking pictures in sunlight but early morning and evening are also beautiful time to take a picture. I'm sorry I can't give much advice as I'm no expert, sometimes I take a picture and it's not great. Sometimes it's wonderful. A lot of the time I don't think about what I'm taking a picture of, if I like it I'll shoot it and hope it turns out great. If you have the time, take the photo multiple times and figure out what will work with the elements around you. Just try. I'll work out in the end.
