Location
I took this a couple of miles away from where I live. I had been out for a while and had a few shots and I was on my way back to the car to go home, when I saw this little fella on the pavement. He couldn't fly because he was so wet, I did move him to a safer place when I had finished.Time
This was taken at about 0940 on a really wet day in June. I'd already been out early with the dog Probably about 0400.. As usual I had my camera with me, I don't go anywhere without it. This is one of about 200 shots I took that dayLighting
Lighting for this shot was a wet dismal day in June. Grey skies, pouring rain, windy no extra lighting was used.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D3200, SIGMA APO 70-300mm F4 -5.6 DG Macro, Tripod nothing specialInspiration
I'd like to say that I was inspired to take this photo but the honest truth is he caught my eye. He was somewhere that he wouldn't have normally been. I was lucky. I usually shoot something that catches my eye, it could be a slug ( not to everybody's taste) or it may be a glide or a crease on a river. If it catches my eye I try to get the shot.Editing
I'm not one for technical terms, I import all of my raw files into Lightroom, I use Lightroom to catalouge my shots and add metadata but I process in Photoshop. On this one I did very little to it apart from lens correction it's more or less as it came out of the camera. In my camera bag
What's in my bag? Not the greatest equipment. A Nikon D3200 with the kit lenses, AF-S Nikkor18-55mm 1:3.5 - 5.6G, AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4 - 5.6G ED,SIGMA APO 70-300mm F4 -5.6 DG Macro. Filters, IR Remote Control, Sometimes a TT560 Speedlite Flash. An inexpensive tripod with ball head. Microfibre cloths and a groundsheet. I spend a fair bit of time in rivers taking photos so the groundsheet is essential to keep my kit dry or for me to lie on. It also comes in handy as a waterproof cape if it rains really heavily.Feedback
Do I have any advice? Patience, have patience don't rush. Always be prepared as you never know when a shot will present itself. I often drive with my camera ready on the passenger seat of the car. Don't rush, take a slow measured approach, I've lost so many filters and remote controls in the middle of a river because I've rushed to get a shot. I spend a lot of time in the middle of rivers taking photo's you learn not to rush things. Get out of bed at stupid o'clock when everyone else is sleeping, you'll be surprised at what you can see and shoot. Most of all just get out there, if you're not out there then you'll never get the shot.
