Behind The Lens

Location

I'm a carer for my daughter of 11 who has Cystic Fibrosis and Aspergers (with a couple other added tweaks to her diagnosis). I love photography and the creative flow of developing an image, but I don't get to photograph as often as I'd like. This photo was taken in the spare bedroom of my home in Australia, with my eldest daughter being my model. I'm a self taught hobby photographer who just loves photography.

Time

I'd spent most of the day trying to get my youngest to do a shoot for me and just when I'd given up my eldest decided to help me out at the last minute. It was early evening, Saturday 6th August 2016 at about 6.30pm.

Lighting

Well as you can guess I don't have any studio, but I knew I was going to do a creative edit on this image so I wasn't too fused that I only had the house lights to work with. We have very soft, dull lights through out the home which worked well in this situation, but they are terrible to read anything with.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5 D mark ii with the EF 25mm - 105mm F/4L kit lens as that's what was on the Camera at the time.

Inspiration

What first inspired me to take photo's was my children. I did dabble a bit in my earlier years but it wasn't until they came into the picture that I really started to want to capture there every moment. I guess you just want to have something to look back on , something to trigger the memory so that those moments don't get lost over time. There was a lot happening at the time with illnesses for both one of my children and my niece so I my thoughts were on the silent prayers and wishes hoping that our prayers were going to be answered and everything would be alright. The feather drifting down was a symbol that Angels were listening. The tears are both for sadness and for the realization that everything for now was going to be alright.

Editing

I did my editing in Photoshop with various layers and alterations using the Photoshop tools. . I'm not as advanced as some but I'm happy with my progress.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I have the Canon 5D mark ii, a EF 24 - 205 F/4L , the EF 70 - 200mm F2.8L and a EF 100mm F2.8L at the moment. Battery packs and memory cards, cleaning cloths and a remote trigger.

Feedback

Creative editing really is just that. You can take any image and develop it to your ideas. I don't just see the subject, I already had a vision as I was capturing this image to know what I intend doing to it. Sometimes though I won't know until I get into the images and idea's will only then start to flow. I guess everyone is different on how they finally decide on there creative editing process. I wanted to take this image and alter it to reflect what I was feeling at that particular time.
