Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my way home from work one evening. We get some beautiful sunsets and I'd seen that the wind had turned the windmill into the perfect position so I chucked a u-turn, drove down a dirt road to position myself out the front of it and took a few snaps.

Time

It was taken at that moment just past sunset where the sun was down and the land was dark (had to use my headlights to change my camera settings) but the sky was still a riot of colour.

Lighting

There was absolutely no external light other than the subject, one farmhouse nearby with a few house lights on but nowhere near enough to distort the natural lighting.

Equipment

Shot on my Canon 600D. I used to keep it in the car at all times for moments like these.

Inspiration

We built a new house about 10 years ago now and instead of buying pictures to put up I've slowly built a small collection of beautiful local photos to put onto canvas.

Editing

I'm not a big fan of post processing, maybe a bit of exposure or saturation tweaks here and there but otherwise I prefer to use them as they are. I know it makes for more "boring" pictures but it accurately reflects what I see which means more to me on a personal level than a processed improvement.

In my camera bag

I bought my Canon when the camera house had a deal with the body and 3 lenses (you know the standard special they trot out sometimes). I still have only those lenses. I added a polarising filter, a spare card, some cleaning supplies and have a cheap full size Manfrotto tripod. I do plan to add an external flash and when I have more time to enjoy my camera will add a macro lens and a big telephoto lens for more native wildlife shoots.

Feedback

If there's a nature photo I want but don't have my camera, or the circumstances aren't quite perfect I pull up a weather app and take a screenshot of the current conditions and snap a few phone pics. Then I can use the time of day, the time of year and the weather conditions to build a plan to get THE perfect shot.
