Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Rockledge Gardens in Rockledge Florida. My roommate was going and asked if I would like to go along. I wanted to take shots for my photography class I was enrolled in beginners digital photography at the time the shot was taken

Time

This shot was taken at 2:33 p.m. on June 3, 2016. It was a hot bright day in Brevard County Florida.

Lighting

The lighting on this day was pretty harsh. June in Florida can produce some intense harsh light. As luck would have it the butterfly area was an enclosed screened room located outside in the gardens.

Equipment

This shot was captured on a Nikon d5100 with a 55-200 mm lens. No flash, no tripod, but I was seated on a bench which provided the stabilization needed to capture the butterfly.

Inspiration

I needed some practice for my photography class assignment. I am still nervous and anxious about going out and shooting, and since I don't have my own garden, I jumped at the chance to ride along. I did not know there was a butterfly enclosure until about an hour into my visit to the gardens. When I found the enclosure, I sat and waited.

Editing

Since there was full sun, I did have to edit the highlights since I shoot in raw. I know very little about editing but I love to crop photos. I am hoping to learn more about editing for the future.

In my camera bag

I have a 18-55mm lens as well as the 55-200 mm lens. I carry a tripod and a monopod. I am wanting more equipment and my goal is to slowly add more equipment. I am an amateur photographer who is wanting to become professional some day.

Feedback

Brevard County Florida located on the east coast (named the Space Coast) is hot and bright. I recommend a hat and sunglasses as well as a a microfiber cloth. The humidity can cause excessive perspiration , even into the viewfinder so the microfiber cloth is essential. Patience, If you sit and be patient the shots will present themselves. Butterflies are graceful, so its easier to be patient.
