Location
This photo is the Vietnam Memorial on the National Mall in Washington DCTime
This was taken just before the sun appeared above the horizon.Lighting
The challenge was capturing the details of the black memorial wall and not over exposing the sky. To solve this problem I shot this picture as an HDR. This allowed me to properly expose for the highlights and shadows.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D mk lll with a Canon17-40 mm L series lens. I shot this on my Gitzo tripod.Inspiration
The Vietnam Memorial is an inspiring location to photograph. As I scouted this location I found this angle which captures the beginning and end point of the memorial with the Washington Monument in alignment.Editing
I processed this picture in Lightroom and used Aurora HDR software to create the HDR shot.In my camera bag
I always have my 5D mk lll with me. My usual lenses are my 17-40, a Canon 24-70 mk ll and a 70-200.Feedback
The monuments are great to photo but are always crowded. If you want to get shots without people you must be set to shoot at least 30 minutes before sunrise. Sunrise is the best time to photograph Washington DC
