Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my friend's kitchen as she made flower arrangements for her baby shower. I was playing around with the camera and noticed the water droplets looked so cool as she sprayed the arrangements after their completion.

Time

This was early evening or so. It was taken inside so daylight wasn't so much a factor.

Lighting

This was handheld in not-so-great overhead can lighting! I had my sister hold a flashlight at an angle off to the side so that I could capture more detail on the water droplets. I love how with the macro lens it looks like it could have been early morning in a field.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon d7000 with a Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro lens. I did not use a flash, but I did have a flashlight aimed at the flower for a bit more ambient light.

Inspiration

The water droplets on the flowers as my friend sprayed them down were just begging to be photographed with my macro lens!

Editing

Yes, I upped the brightness a bit to counteract the darker kitchen lighting and adjusted the sharpness and clarity to make the water droplets pop.

In my camera bag

I am a minimalist! I have a Nikon d7000 body with the following lenses: Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro, Nikon 35mm 1.8, and Sigma 17-55mm 2.8 zoom. I also have an external flash, a tripod, and various lens filters.

Feedback

Get steady when shooting macro in not-great light! In this case, I rested my elbows on the kitchen counter and pulled my arms tight into my body in order to minimize camera shake as much as possible. In order to get some contrast, I had a helper hold a flashlight at an angle to help illuminate the water droplets and make the flower look less flat against the background of greens. The extra light also helped me shoot at a larger aperture and minimize camera shake.
