Behind The Lens

Location
This was one of my first images when I started taking photography more seriously. It was a foggy Sunday morning in London so I just went out to my local park in Wood green to look for anything interesting I could shoot.
Time
It was about 8 am in the morning and I though to go for a few shots before the fog clears
Lighting
Due to the thick fog the light was quite uniform and soft so it was relatively easy to get a balanced exposure
Equipment
Shot with a Nikon D5000 with a kit lens (nikkor 18-55 vr) @ F/3.5. I placed the camera on ground. Shot 3 bracketed images -1,0,+1 EV for the HDR effect
Inspiration
I wasn't sure what I was looking for to shoot as this was during my early days in photography. I though it will be interesting to shoot something in the fog but apart from some isolated trees I couldn't find an interesting subject. Then I noticed that my shoes were fitting pretty well with the moody scenery so I took them off and went for this low vantage point composition. I really enjoyed the results!
Editing
With the fog most of the details were lost. I was going for more drama in the photo so I decided to try an HDR merge to pop out as much detail as I could. I used photomatix for the HDR merging and finished the image in lightroom using basic adjustments and sharpening
In my camera bag
I am currently using a Nikon D7200 as I got it at a bargain price and couldn't afford a full frame system. Lenses I always carry my Tokina 11-16 f2.8 DX II for ultra wide to wide angle shots, a Nikkor 35mm DX f1.8 G and 50mm f1.8 prime lenses for mid range and recently got a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 for telephoto and compressed perspective shots. I also carry my Neewer Carbon Fiber 66" tripod, a Zomei 10-stop ND and CPL filters and a Cokin grad ND filter kit.
Feedback
Shooting in heavy fog is definitely easy to go for a clean and simple compositions without any unnecessary distractions. The light will also fall nicely on your subject creating very soft shadows like a huge soft box. Find a good subject as a focal point and then look for interesting angles. Keep experimenting as you can end up with a great shots from the simplest things like your shoes!
