Behind The Lens

Location

This long exposured photo was taken in early Fall in May 2016 at Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

Time

On a cloudy afternoon, shortly before rain was purring down for 3 days I took this photo of Wanaka Tree

Lighting

I liked the late afternoon light coming from the background shining on the hills. The tree is a nice contrast from the mountains and got its perfect attention.

Equipment

I used my Canon 700D with my Tamron 18-200mm, a tall Tripod and a ND Greyfilter

Inspiration

The lonely tree of Lake Wanaka is a famous ( and sometimes annoying frequently) photographed scenery in South Island New Zealand. The spot itself is really nice as it is located between high mountains on a beautiful lake. I wanted to have a picture which is not at the usual sunrise or sunset, not on the most perfect day or with the most beautiful light. It should be special, as well as the angle I did shot. For this I walked a bit into the lake and placed my tripod there. I really like the stones in the foreground and the mystical atmosphere.

Editing

I always photograph in manual mode, with manual sharpening. I edit my Raw pictures just as much as is necessary. For this picture I deleted the dust, pulled up clarity and sharpness a bit and corrected highlights and shadows. I increased the amount of aquamarin information and put a gradual filter with blue correction from the lower right edge to mid water level.

In my camera bag

Normally in my camera bag is my Canon 700D, Canon 15-33mm, Tamron 18-200mm, Macro and super wide angle adapter lenses, a small joby gorilla tripos, a normal tall tripod, grey-& colour filters and cleaning stuff.

Feedback

As the lonely tree in Lake Wanaka is a very famous motive, you should try to find a special angle, see it with your own eyes and capture it in your own style. A long exposure needs a tripod, otherwise you'll have an unsharp picture. Try to wait for a day where there's no wind or just a little breeze, because the leafs or other objects, which you want to capture sharp, could be blurred. Try diffrent seasons and times of a day.
