Location
This photo is a composition of two main images. I took two separate photographs of two amazing cosplay/burlesque performers at an incredible venue, with a fitting name; The Art Asylum. Poppy Raine dressed as Harley Quinn and Luna L'Amour as The Joker.Time
Luna was photographed before lunch and Poppy after. Since we had lunch in a nearby restaurant and Luna was in full costume, we raised a few eyebrows!Lighting
The photo of Poppy was taken in a studio with a Ring Light. The photo of Luna was taken in natural light in the vats of a derelict brewery (both within the Art Asylum).Equipment
I used my Fujifilm XT-10 and a lot of laughter (both always help to get great images).Inspiration
The image was taken at a group shoot where there were 6 cosplay models and 6 photographers. Each photographer had an hour with each model. I had discussed the costumes with the models before hand but had not realised until we all arrived that Poppy and Luna are indeed great friends. Since we only had individual sessions I wanted to try and form a composite image where the two were together. I wanted something extreme, crazy and off the wall which perfectly matched the models, their personas, and the photographer!Editing
The images were processed separately to start with in Photoshop. I spent a long time on retouching and filtering to achieve a surreal, comic book feel. I then added some playing cards to the image of Poppy and placed the image of Luna onto the Joker cards. To get depth and movement I varied the amount of blur on the cards. In my camera bag
I am pretty minimalist. I don't normally carry a tripod, just my camera. I sometimes use an off camera flash triggered remotely from the hot shoe of my camera. I also try to carry a packet of biscuits.Feedback
The best advice I think I can give is to have a good rapport with people you are photographing. Don't be afraid to try something off the wall. Step out of your comfort zone. And laugh. Laughing is always good.
