This was taken from our ship as we entered the Lamaire Channel cruising the Western Peninsular of Antarctica.Time
We received an announcement from the captain that we were entering the Lamaire channel shortly before 11 am, so we all headed out on deck, and found that as we entered the channel the water became very glassy and showed beautiful reflections, we were quite close as its a narrow channel, but with my wide angle i was able to capture it all.Lighting
Luckily it was overcast for the most giving some nice cloud formation with soft lighting, which reflected well.Equipment
I took this with my Sony a7rii and the Sony Zeiss 16-35mm @16mm, no tripod .Inspiration
The reflection was inspiring here as I love them and see new shapes made by them.In this particular reflection if you look sideways there is a face shape with a big smiley mouth and within that face is a smaller snowman type face.Editing
Post processing was in Lightroom mostly, adding a gradient on the sky, sharpening and a little clarity and then in photoshop I extended the canvas a small amount each side, as being so close to the mountain and at my widest it was almost touching the edge of my frame.In my camera bag
On this cruise my bag had two camera bodies one with my 16-35mm and the other with my 70-200mm, and more often than not we all (group) went out with the two bodies around our necks as there isn't the time to change lenses and also this meant no chance of getting anything on the sensor.I took extra cards as well. I took 6 batteries with me and two chargers as we were heading out on zodiacs twice a day for three hours at a time, the rest of the time we were either eating/sleeping or shooting from the ship so keeping enough batteries charged was important.My laptop was also in the bag as I downloaded everything after each shoot.Feedback
On a cruise like this i found it really important to get into a routine of coming back from a shoot and immediately downloading images and charging up batteries .The tendency is to shoot everything as one is aware there is not likely to be another opportunity to repeat, hence thousands of images to deal with. It can be easy to just notice the rocks/island itself when close and I found that looking at my live view , especially with the super wide angle gave me a different viewpoint.
