Built to display not only Rome's power through the many different colored marble stones from the far reaches of the empire, but also Roman engineering. They were able to construct a coffered concrete dome with an oculus (an opening in the center which provides most of the light inside) a feat previously not possible on that magnitude. The building was dedicated to all the Roman gods. It has been used as a Christian church for the past 14 centuries.
