Location
i took this photo in a section of dayton, ohio called the oregon district. it's got so many different backdrop choices that at golden hour there's really no way to go wrong.Time
golden hour. always golden hour. i love playing with natural light, so i try to schedule experimental shoots like this one (if i can help it) during periods where I will have ample opportunity to play with the lighting. sometimes it means working fast, but sometimes that's the fun of it.Lighting
i'm a huge, huge proponent for natural lighting - so this shot (you guessed it) is in natural light. because it was just about golden hour when this was taken, there was a really pervasive soft glow that contributed a lot to the look of the whole shoot that day in general. it was honestly the kind of light i dream of having for all of my daytime shoots!Equipment
this used my canon 5dmiii with my sigma 35mm f/1.4 art, and a little bit of spontaneity.Inspiration
i work a lot with local bloggers who need material for their sites - essentially we trade. they get pictures they need, in return for model/themed/experimental photoshoots for me (because paying models is expensive...) it's a pretty good trade. this particular day, my blogger/model showed up with these sunglasses, and i couldn't help but to snap some quick shots, even though it didn't necessarily match the rest of my themed work that day.Editing
lightroom is my friend. i mostly played with curves on this shot to bring out some more richness in the subtle pops of color interspersed throughout the image. i also added a bit of grain in post on this one, because i was feeling the mood.In my camera bag
if i'm down to essentials, i take my canon 5dmiii body, and my sigma 35mm f/1.4 art, and a reflector. and no bag, because at that point you don't need it. i like to travel light, because i honestly feel like it helps me focus on the artistry of the image itself, rather than being concerned with making sure i still have all of my equipment/haven't accidentally forgotten to zip things (which is only mildly catastrophic...). if i'm on a wedding or other such adventure, i tend to also bring along my canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS/USM, and the canon 100mm f/2.8 L macro, for good measure - all of which i do put in a bag, because i can't juggle that many lenses.Feedback
don't be afraid to just take the picture. my shoot hadn't technically started when i took this - my model hadn't changed into the planned outfit, and we weren't at our intended location yet. but i saw an opportunity, and i took it - i stopped in the middle of walking to our site for the day, asked my model (we'll call her 'v') to stop, i posed her, and shot a couple of frames. i feel like it's an obvious point to make, and maybe i'm the only one with enough social anxiety to be concerned with inconveniencing people by taking their picture, but i feel like it's important to remind yourself that if you have the opportunity to catch a moment, take advantage of that.
