My wife and I were in Windsor visiting some friends who moved over to England and met up in Windsor. We were walking around the town's high street and I nearly tripped over the dog bowls in the photo while trying to get another shot. Other than the laugh we had at my amazing walking skills - we have two dogs at home and caffeine is the last thing my golden retriever would *ever* need.Time
This was right after lunch, so I'd imagine it was around 2pm local time, with full sun - yes you read that right - Full Sun in England! Pretty fitting ... mad dogs and Englishmen and all that :)Lighting
The original image was slightly overexposed, but I was able to clean that up in on1 photo and Lightroom. I added the textures to really bring this into a more antique look with the wood and chalkboard looks of the signs and cracked paint of the moldings. This was one of those "I like the composition but the lighting is less than ideal" moments and lots of playing in post processing made it all come togetherEquipment
This was taken with a Nikon D610, Tamron 28-300mm lens (85mm / f/11 / ISO 200) without any flash or other gear. This was captured just meandering around with my walkabout kit.Inspiration
The potential of an insurance claim for tripping over the bowls ... *just kidding*! I had been on the road for about 3 weeks at this point and was desperately missing my dogs back at home in the States. Seeing how dog friendly the entire area was made me miss them that much more and I wanted to take this and work on it while traveling.Editing
This photo needed a lot of work - it was over exposed and nearly blown out in a few spots. I cleaned the image up a bit in Lightroom tweaking the exposure highlights and shadows to get something that I could import into On1 Photo for further processing. In On1 I really pushed things ... used a Photomorphisis texture and an antique film preset, multiple vignettes and brushed in some contrast here and there. I don't typically do this type of post processing - mainly HDR tweaking or simply cleaning up the images ... it was a lot of fun to see what I could pull off using On1 Photo and Effects using a fairly bad photo as the base image. In my camera bag
I travel light as possible. In my bag is a Nikon D610 body and it will typically have the Tamron 28-300mm walkabout lens as in this photo, and a wide angle and fisheye in the bag. I'll also have my tripod or monopod, extra battery/grip and some lens cleaner ... and bottles of water - using the camera bag with full water bottles makes a great weight to hang on and stabilize the tripod for shots like this! I am using a Peak Design messenger bag and depending on where I am going, will also have my Macbook Pro and external ruggedized hard disk for when I can find a coffee shop to sit and do some editing. Hopefully later this year I will be adding a Sony mirrorless to the bag ... but only if Santa is good to me this year (hint hint).Feedback
Just Shoot! This photo is a great example of not overthinking and just capturing the image. Take a bunch of shots with bracketing (which I wish I did here) and once you transfer the images to your computer review them and see what each image tells you it needs - sounds silly but they do. The chipped wood, antique/cast iron dog bowl and glass treat jar all screamed for an antique photo treatment - as I was thinking of just deleting the overexposed shot. Honestly, I am glad I listened as this is one of my favorite photos
