I took this photograph at the Weston Super Mare beach, during the summer with my Nikon D3300, using a Nikkor 18-55mm DX VR lens (the kit lens that comes with this camera)Time
It was early evening, I noticed how nice the sky was looking, I decided to start shooting towards the sun to get the silhouette effect, I love messing about with light. This was done freehand with no tripodLighting
Yes, I like shooting with the sun behind and in front, I love silhouette stuff, nothing beats those natural effects! I really liked the way the light was hitting the ocean and helped to highlight the people walking across the beach, I waited for them to get in the right area, then started to snapEquipment
No tripod, No Flash, just my Nikkon D3300 with its kit lens, the Nikkor 18-55mm DX VR, a Hoya UV filter was attached but I really just use those to protect the main glass from the odd bit of water or dirt what may come its wayInspiration
I love the use of light, I have a background in Art. I just saw the scene, moody clouds, sparkling sun hitting the ocean, people walking across the beach. I just thought to myself this would be a nice scene to shoot with the silhouette effect in mind, had a play with a few settings until I was happyEditing
I do just a little bit or none at all. I used a haze remover for this one, it just made the scene look a little bit more moody/atmospheric. The photo was taken in high JPEG, I have now started to take stuff in RAW, better for tweakingIn my camera bag
I have a camera bag, Nikon D3300, Nikkor 18-55 DX VR lens, Nikkor 55-200 non VR lens. cleaning cloth, Sandisk SD cards. I recently bought a Sigma 18-35 Art Lens, with a Hoya Pro1 protector filter. I do use a tripod here and there but that is a borrowed item. I do like the D3300 a lot but I would love to own something like a Nikon D700 or D7100, I know they are older models, I plan to get one of these for a good price at some point, they would suit my love for outdoors stuff :)Feedback
I would say just keep your eyes alert, just look out for that scene/picture, small or big. don't be afraid to play with all the camera settings, don't fear the M/A/P!!! auto doesn't do everything. For the silhouette thing, be aware of the position of the sun (in front for the beach shot I did) I personally like to have it behind and in front of me for different shoots, just have fun with your camera, take pictures of everything, find out what you like most.
