I took this photo from a light plane. Our coast line is very rugged with black sand and in some places a very rocky shore line. This view shows from the coast to Mountain top. Mount Taranaki is in the middle of our province. We are very lucky to be at the beach one moment and 30 minutes later be on the mountain. We have very fertile land and Taranaki is a large Dairy Cow province.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from a light plane.... This photo shows the very fertile agricultural dairy farm lands, from the coast up to the base of Mt Taranaki. Taranaki coastline is very rugged, with high cliffs, which erode away with pounding surf, rain and wind. The sand is rich Ironsand. This black ironsand was formed 2.5 million years ago from rock deposited on the coast by volcanic activity in the Taranaki region. Ironsand mining and smelting operations are no longer undertaken. Mount Taranaki has many walking/hiking tracks and huts. Plus the ski field is well used in the winter. The 2,518 metres (8,261 ft) mountain is one of the most symmetrical volcanic cones in the world. There is a secondary cone, Fanthams Peak, 1,966 metres (6,450 ft), on the south side. Because of its resemblance to Mount Fuji, Taranaki provided the backdrop for the movie The Last Samurai. The last major eruption of Taranaki occurred around 1854.

Time

A friend rang and said this is a glorious morning I'm going for a fly would you like to come. Who could turn that offer down! Camera was checked & I was ready to go. This photo was taken at 4:46 pm on the 7th November 2015. F stop f/6.3 Exposure 1/1600 sec ISO 400 Superb day flying around town & country side.

Lighting

Just all natural lighting...only mother nature for lighting.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D5100....55-300mm lens. Hand held for this photo

Inspiration

I shot this photo to show our beautiful country side from the rugged coastline to the very scenic mountain.

Editing

Only post processing was to sharpen and a little colour adjustment

In my camera bag

I Always have my tripod, macro lens, Nikon D5100 with 55-300mm lens with flash

Feedback

Fly early to mid morning or early evening, no wind and little to no cloud. Have camera gear ready to shoot landscape & go wild taking photos.
