Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at neighbours. They had, just come home with their new 'Main Coon' cat the day before. "Jesse" 3 months old when photo taken. The breeder does not allow her cats to leave before 3 months old.

Time

I was very excited to be able to pop next-door to see the new arrival. Photo was taken at 2:25pm. Taken inside house.

Lighting

No special lighting, just light thru windows.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D5100, no tri pod only hand held today. Used a fast shutter speed to cover movement from cat. ISO 2263 - F/5 - Exp 1/3 second - No Flash. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

My inspiration to take this photo was - I enjoy taking animal photos. And this was a new kid on the block, I had to have him in my animal collection.

Editing

Post - processing consisted of removing cat from original messy back ground and replace cat onto new textured background. Original photo was place onto a colour textured background which is lovely, then I desaturated image to create a Black & White photo. A little sharpening & a little tweek with levels slider to enhance the Black & Whites.

In my camera bag

I travel light where ever I go - I don't have big fancy equipment. My pack consists of - Nikon D5100 - 18-105mm lens / Tamron 90mm F/2.8 macro / tripod / Speedlight flash / polarizing filter and a few coloured filters as well.

Feedback

For my image of 'Jesse' I think the important thing is to be have patience. Animals just do their own thing! So wait! - be ready! - use fast shutter speed with rapid multi shots. This gives (for me) plenty of shots to choose from and some times the slightest change in head movement / eyes creates a better pose.
