Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my basement, while he slept.

Time

It was about 7 or 8 in the evening on a Friday night, I was just watching Netflix while my roommates upstairs played a very loud game of beer pong. I suddenly felt inspired to take some pictures and looked over to see my cat sleeping on my parent's old rocking chair they gave me.

Lighting

I didn't have much going for me, it was winter and already dark out, even if it wasn't I had one tiny window to get natural light out of. I like the kinda darker looks, so I used my external flash but turned it away from him, and just used the ceiling light above me to give off that warmish look.

Equipment

It was shot with a Nikon D3000, with a 50mm F1.8 lens and an external flash.

Inspiration

I was feeling like taking pictures, thinking of maybe going out to take pictures of the wintery scene outside, but he looked so cute and peaceful where he was I just had to take a picture.

Editing

I had to do a little lightening up of his left eye since it was shadowed a bit too much originally, and I played with the colours to give it more warmer feel.

In my camera bag

I have my main camera, a Nikon D3000, my trusty external flash, and my two favourite lenses. My 50mm and my 300mm zoom lens. I have an extra battery charged and ready to go and an extra SD card.

Feedback

It's very hard to get a cat to sit still and do what you want, so this shot was very lucky that he decided to open his eyes and not look directly at me. More often than not, I have to use a toy to get him to look where I want. Other than that, if you have a not great living situation (such as mine, living in a basement with one tiny window), make use of that external flash and play with how it changes the look depending on where you point it. That's what I did until I got one that I liked.
